Crochet Envelope Keychain Pattern
A small crochet envelope shape becomes a useful handmade keychain when a simple oval base is extended into a compact pouch and finished with a flap. The design uses sturdy cord yarn, a small closure, and a hanging loop so the finished crochet piece can be carried on a keyring or bag.
The foundation chain determines the basic width of the pouch, while the stitches worked around both sides turn that chain into an oval base. After the body gains height, the top section is shaped into a flap, giving the keychain its crochet envelope-like appearance and creating a natural place for the hanging loop.

Materials & Tools Needed
- Polypropylene or nylon cord yarn in a main color
- Accent-colored cord for the decorative bow
- Crochet hook suitable for your chosen cord

- Small strip of sew-on or stick-on Velcro
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Lighter, if using synthetic cord and sealing the yarn ends

Choosing a Sturdy Cord
Polypropylene or nylon cord is useful for this type of keychain because the finished fabric needs to hold its shape while being handled regularly. A softer yarn can also be used, but the pouch may have a more flexible appearance.
If you substitute the cord with a different yarn, choose your hook according to the yarn thickness and aim for a firm fabric rather than a very loose stitch.
Finished Size & Customization
The final size will vary according to your cord thickness, hook size, and tension.
You can adjust the pouch by:
- Making the foundation chain longer for a wider base.
- Making the foundation chain shorter for a smaller pouch.
- Adding or removing body rounds to change the pouch height.
- Adjusting the flap length to change how far it overlaps the front.
- Using a different accent color for the bow.
Because the flap also carries the hanging loop, check its proportions before adding the final rows.

Crochet the Envelope Base
The pouch begins with a foundation chain. Instead of turning the chain into a flat row, you will crochet around both sides of it to create an oval.
This rounded base gives the pouch its width and establishes the shape that the body will grow from.
Foundation Chain: Make a slip knot and ch 18.
Do not pull the chain excessively tight. A relaxed foundation makes it easier to work into the opposite side without twisting the chain.
Round 1: Work Around the Chain
- Work 1 sc in each chain across the first side.
- You should have 16 sc along this side.
- In the final chain, work 3 sc in the same stitch.
- Continue working along the opposite side of the foundation chain.
- Work 16 sc back toward the beginning.
- In the final corner, work 3 sc in the same stitch.
- Join with a sl st to the beginning stitch.
The extra stitches at each end allow the work to turn around the foundation chain and form the oval rather than creating a straight rectangle.
Round 2: Shape the Oval
- Ch 1.
- Work the sc2tog decreases according to the stitch placement established in the tutorial.
- Continue around the oval base.
- Join with a sl st at the end of the round.
Keep the two curved ends even as you work. If one end begins looking noticeably wider than the other, check your corner stitches before continuing.
Build the Pouch Body
Continue repeating the established stitch pattern for a total of 15 rounds.
The body should gradually develop enough height to form the small envelope pouch while maintaining the oval shape at the base.
Work the rounds consistently rather than pulling the cord tightly. Excessive tension can make the pouch narrower and may also make the flap difficult to align later.
Shape the Envelope Flap
Once the body reaches the required height, the upper portion is worked as a flap rather than continuing completely around the pouch.
Flap Setup
- Ch 1.
- Work 8 sc.
- Ch 6 to create the hanging loop.
- Skip the required stitches.
- Finish with 8 sc on the other side.
The chain-6 section becomes the attachment point for the keychain hardware, so keep these chains even and avoid making them excessively loose.
Flap Row 1
- Ch 1.
- Turn.
- Work 1 sc in each stitch across the flap.
- Work directly into the chain space as part of the row.
The flap should form a continuous section across the top of the pouch.
Continue the Flap
Repeat the established row pattern for up to 13 rows, or until the flap reaches the length shown in the tutorial.
Before fastening off, fold the flap down over the pouch and check that it reaches the intended closure position.
Secure the Yarn Ends
Fasten off, leaving a short tail.
For synthetic cord, the tutorial uses gentle heat to seal the end and reduce fraying. If you use this method, work very carefully and keep the flame away from the crochet fabric.
After securing the end, weave it into the stitches where possible so it does not remain exposed on the finished keychain.
Add the Velcro Closure
The Velcro keeps the flap closed while still allowing the pouch to be opened easily.
- Place one small piece of Velcro on the inside of the flap.
- Fold the flap into its closed position.
- Mark the corresponding location on the front of the pouch.
- Attach the second piece of Velcro there.
- Use a small amount of hot glue to secure both pieces.
Check the Closure Before Gluing
Close the flap once before permanently attaching the Velcro.
The two pieces should meet naturally without forcing the flap downward or pulling it too far upward. Positioning the closure after checking the overlap helps keep the envelope shape neat.
Attach the Keychain Ring
The ch 6 loop created during the flap setup is used for the hardware.
- Open the split ring carefully.
- Insert it through the central chain loop.
- Check that the ring passes through the crochet loop itself rather than catching only one loose strand.
- Close the split ring securely.
Give the attachment a gentle pull before continuing. The loop should remain stable, and the flap should not distort around the hardware.
Add the Decorative Bow
Use the accent-colored cord to make a small bow.
- Form a simple decorative bow from the accent cord.
- Adjust both loops so they are approximately even.
- Secure the center.
- Glue or sew the bow onto the center front of the envelope flap.
Keep the bow small enough that it does not interfere with opening or closing the Velcro.
Final Finishing Check
Before using the keychain, check the finished piece from the front and back.
- The oval base should remain even.
- The pouch body should have a consistent height.
- The flap should sit centrally over the front.
- The Velcro pieces should line up correctly.
- The chain-6 hanging loop should hold the split ring securely.
- The bow should be firmly attached.
- Synthetic yarn ends should be sealed and secured.
- No loose adhesive should remain around the edges.
The completed envelope can now be used as a small keychain pouch or attached to a bag or zipper.
