Create a personalized bag charm with this crochet letter D keychain, made from two matching panels and finished with a contrasting white border.

This mint-green crochet letter D has a simple graphic look that works beautifully as a personalized keychain. Two matching panels create its main shape, while white edging gives the finished letter a clean contrast that helps its outline stand out.
Rather than working this crochet design as one continuous piece, you’ll first shape each D panel from a long foundation chain. After joining each strip into its curved crochet letter form, the two panels are placed together and bordered with contrasting yarn. You can keep mint green and white for a fresh finish or choose different color combinations to match bags, initials, or gifts.

Materials & Tools Needed
- Main Color (MC): Mint Green DK or lightweight polyester yarn, such as Onitsuga Polycherry.
- Contrasting Color (CC): White DK or lightweight yarn for border.
- Crochet Hook: 2.0 mm crochet hook.
- Tapestry Needle: For sewing panel ends and weaving yarn tails.
- Scissors: For cutting yarn and trimming ends.
- Lighter: Optional for carefully sealing synthetic yarn ends.
- Keychain Ring: For attaching finished letter D to keys or bags.
Finished Size & Customization
Finished letter D is compact and suitable for bags, keys, and personalized gifts.
Color changes offer the easiest way to personalize it. Keep mint green for MC with white CC for a crisp two-color combination, or try different contrasting shades for inner and outer edging.
Cotton yarn can also be substituted for listed yarn when you prefer different texture and handling.

Crochet the Two Letter D Panels
Each panel begins as one long strip. Its unusual combination of double-crochet decreases creates the shape needed for letter D, so work each sequence carefully and keep your stitches consistent.
Make Panel One
Using MC and 2.0 mm hook, begin with foundation chain.
Foundation: Make slip knot and ch 43.
Row 1: Work 12 dc, then dc5tog over next 5 chain spaces, 3 dc, dc2tog 4 times, 3 dc, dc2tog 4 times, 3 dc, dc2tog 4 times, then finish with 3 dc.
Shape Check
Do not try to force strip into D shape while crocheting Row 1. Keep edges even and let stitch sequence create its changing width. The curved letter form will be established during assembly.
Fasten off MC, leaving long sewing tail. If using synthetic yarn, you may optionally seal end carefully with lighter.

Make Panel Two
Repeat exactly same foundation and Row 1 instructions with MC to create second identical panel.
Fasten off MC with another long tail for sewing.
Before Joining: Compare both panels side by side. Their lengths, curved ends, and stitch pattern should correspond before you sew either one into its loop.
Turn Each Panel Into Letter D Shape
Take first crocheted strip and gently curve its two ends toward each other until strip forms loop resembling letter D.
Thread one long yarn tail onto tapestry needle and sew two ends together securely.
Repeat with second panel.

Keep Joining Neat
Align ends carefully before sewing. Since these joins will remain part of finished D shape, uneven alignment can make one panel look twisted or cause outer edges to sit differently once both panels are layered.
After sewing, check that each piece holds its D-shaped loop without pulling apart at join.
Layer Both D Panels
Place two completed D panels back-to-back, matching their edges around both outer and inner perimeters.
This alignment matters because next step joins both thicknesses at once with CC.
Border Round
Attach CC (White) yarn.
Working through both thicknesses simultaneously, crochet sc around entire outer and inner perimeters of letter D, joining two panels together as you travel around shape.
Work carefully around curves and corners. Keep tension even so white border does not pull either panel inward or leave sections separated.
Edge Check
Before fastening off CC, inspect entire D shape.
- Both panels should remain aligned.
- White border should pass around outer perimeter.
- Inner opening should also be joined with sc.
- No large gaps should remain between layers.
- Curved section should retain recognizable D shape.
If an edge has shifted, correct alignment before completing finishing.

Finish Letter D
Fasten off CC after completing border.
Use tapestry needle to weave in all remaining yarn ends securely. Trim excess yarn once ends are safely hidden.
If synthetic yarn is being used, lighter may be used carefully to seal suitable yarn ends, following safe handling practices.
Add Keychain Ring
Locate top loop of finished letter D.
Attach keychain ring through this upper loop, making sure connection passes through secure crocheted fabric rather than catching only loose yarn.
Give ring and letter a gentle pull to check attachment before placing it on bag or keys.

Personalize Your Finished Initial
The same color approach can be adapted for different uses. Try favorite color combinations, school colors, gift colors, or matching shades for several initials. Keeping MC and CC strongly contrasting will make D outline easier to see.
